BOTANICAL GARDEN OOTY

 







    The Gardens, divided into several sections, cover an area of around 55 acres, and lie on the lower slopes of Doddabetta peak. The garden has a terraced layout. It is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. This garden was laid out in 1897 by the Marquis of Tweedale and is spread over 55 acres. Botanical gardens devote their resources to the study and conservation of plants, as well as making the world's plant species diversity known to the public. These gardens also play a central role in meeting human needs and providing well-being. It may contain specialist plant collections such as cacti and other succulent plants, herb gardens, plants from particular parts of the world, and so on; there may be greenhouses, shade houses, again with special collections such as tropical plants, alpine plants, or other exotic plants.

The spice show, introduced in 2010, initially used to be a two-day event, s howcasing a wide variety of spices and the magic of Ooty plantations. The Spice Show is what marks the beginning of the  Ooty Summer Festival . Irrespective of whether you’re a foodie or a connoisseur, this intriguing exhibition is worth visiting and witnessing in the town. Taking a cue from Goa, a spice garden development project was initiated in 2011 to attract tourists. The spice garden will spread across 15 acres in Devala Horticulture Farm near Gudalur at an estimated cost of Rs40 lakh. The project is being funded by the Hill Area Development Project. The spices included mainly poppy seeds, pepper, nutmeg, cardamom, coriander and mustard.  The spices used for the miniature were bought from outside market. NILGIRI MOUNTAIN RAILWAY, TOY TRAIN, NILGIRI MOUNTAIN TRAIN

THE NILGIRI MOUNTAIN RAILWAY/ TOY TRAIN      In 1854, plans were made to build a mountain railway from Mettupalayam to the Nilgiri Hills. However, it took the decision-makers 45 years to cut through the bureaucratic red tape and complete the construction. The line was completed and opened for traffic in June 1899. It was operated first by the Madras Railway under an agreement with the government. The Madras Railway Company continued to manage the railway line on behalf of the government for a long time until the South Indian Railway company purchased it. In 1907, the railway received four  Double Fairlie  locomotives to work the line. These were part of a batch built by the  Avonside Engine Company  in 1879 and 1880 for service in Afghanistan, but had been in store since 1887. The Fairlies continued in use until at least 1914.
