ABOUT THE ROSE GARDEN - OOTY

The Rose Garden is situated in the heart of Ooty town, this garden has been beautifully laid out in terraces with rose tunnels, pergolas and bowers with rose creepers. To commemorate the centenary Flower Show, the Rose Park was established at Vijayanagaram in Udhagamandalam covering an area of 4 hectares in five terraces. Today this garden has the largest collections of roses in the country like Hybrid Tea Roses, miniature rose, Floribunda, Ramblers, roses of unusual colours like black and green are some of the more than 3,000 varieties of roses that will captivate your senses.

The Rose Garden is situated in slopes of the Elk Hill. The rose varieties planted in this park were assembled from different sources. The ‘Nila Maadam’ is located in a spot from where viewers can see the entire rose garden. This garden is maintained by Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. It has also received the award of Excellence for the best rose garden in entire south Asia from the International Rose society in 2006.

The pride of Ooty lies in the Rose Garden, which belongs to an elite club of 35 rose gardens around the world which has won the Garden of Excellence Award for South Asia from the World Federation of Rose Societies. Containing more than twenty thousand varieties of roses, the Rose Garden is one of the most beautiful and well maintained gardens you find in the country, or perhaps, the world. The climate of Ooty is ideal for the plants to have a long blooming season.

The chill weather and adequate monsoon makes it possible for the flowers to have a long flowering season. The Rose Garden is thronged by thousands of tourists year after year. Definitely one of the "must see" places in Ooty, it was initially started to commemorate the centenary Flower Show at the Botanical garden.

Rose garden is maintained by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the garden is arranged into five curving terraces covering four hectares. If you are a photography enthusiast, the place is a visual treat with the flowers arranged in different forms and shapes to capture your imagination.

The first look at the garden gives you the impression that a lot of pain and hard work has gone behind the development of the garden, as it has roses bought all the way from different parts of the world. You even find very rare exotic roses and also roses having strange colors like black and green. The setting sun and the multitude of roses around you make a perfect setting for a romantic evening with your beloved.

Rose show in the garden is beautifully landscaped on terraces. It’s a must-see for visitors. It is recommended to wear walking shoes as there is a lot of walking and climbing involved covering the entire settings. And if roses could speak, they would tell you stories of their birth and death. Really the show is a feast for the eyes.

More than 4,200 hybrid varieties of rose plants from all across the world have been collected and maintained in the garden. The rose plants usually bloom during the first week of April every year, and the Rose Show takes place as part of the summer festival in the Nilgiris.

THE NILGIRI MOUNTAIN RAILWAY/ TOY TRAIN      In 1854, plans were made to build a mountain railway from Mettupalayam to the Nilgiri Hills.     The VEGETABLE SHOW is a summer festival arranged by the Tamil Nadu Department of Tourism and the national Ministry of Tourism. Vegetable show attracts most number of audience in ooty.
