HISTORY OF THE QUEEN OF HILLS....
“Udhagamandalam”
was first discovered during the British rule, by the collector of
coimbatore called John Sullivan in the year 1817.
The name udagamandalam is derived from the word “ottakkalmandu”
which means “A village of a single stone” in Tamil language. But, afterwards
people used to call this place as ooty in short form.
Ootacamund (or Ooty) is situated about 7,400
feet above sea level. Ooty is located 89 kms from Coimbatore, Ooty
deservedly earns its reputation as the 'Queen of Hill Stations' for its
extensive tea plantations, lakes and other natural splendours. Nature has been
generous with this region, which is by far the most beautiful in the state.
Ooty is most famous for its tea plantations. Connoisseurs will find plenty to choose from: dust and leaf; black, green, black and white varieties; and flavours such as masala, jasmine, cardamom and even chocolate.
Officially Ooty is called Ootacamund, the hill-town is better known by its nickname–Ooty. It is loved by Bollywood directors, honeymooners, families, and even backpackers, for its mountains, lakes, gardens, and waterfalls.
Ooty is a year-round destination, but the ideal
time to visit is between the months of April to June and September to
November.
Badaga is a southern Dravidian language spoken by the Badaga people of the Nilgiris
district of Northwest Tamil Nadu.
Since Ooty is situated on higher altitudes, by the
time this air reaches there it has become very much cool and pleasant. This is
the main scientific reason behind the low temperature in hill stations
like Ooty. Ooty lies on latitude 11.4°N and is 1271 km away from the equator.
It is within the tropical zone. It receives direct sunlight at a high
angle, making it hot. It doesn't snow here…
Nilgiris
is a part of the Western Ghats. Ooty the “Queen of Hill Stations”,
Coonoor 19 kms from Ooty and Kotagiri 31 kms from Ooty, are the three hill
stations of this district. The Name 'Nilgiris' means Blue hills (Neelam
– Blue and giri – Hill or Mountain) the first mention of this name has
been found in the Silappadikaram.
Ooty culture has been heavily influenced by the
presence of these migrants. Although Tamil is the main language and also
widely spoken, you will rarely come across a local who cannot speak Kannada and
Malayalam as well. Tulu is also spoken by a small section of the population.
If you want to explore and make the most of Ooty,
the best area to stay in is central Ooty, in areas like Coonoor Road,
Charing Cross, and Doddabetta Road. Although, Ooty is brimming with hotels
and resorts that you can choose from, all of which are located at convenient
distances from all the local attractions.
