THE FLOWER SHOW 2022 @ OOTY
The
popular hill station Ooty is a minor derivation from its original name
Udhagamandalam, sometimes referred to as Ootacamund. In earlier times it was
also called Othakkalmandu. The charm and beauty of this hill station in the
Nilgiri Hills makes it the 'Queen of Hill Stations'.
The
major highlight of the month-long summer festival in the Nilgiris
district is the 124th annual flower show, where lakhs of flowers will be
displayed for tourists from May 20th, 2022. Ooty Flower Show is
organized to showcase the best of flower sculptures, authentic and modern
floral craftsmanship, and artistry and to encourage young artists through
these majestic arts and culture.
The
five-day Ooty botanical garden flower show will be organized at the Government
Botanical Garden, where lakhs of tourists from abroad come here to see the
different varieties of flowers.
Some
of the highlights of the show will include a bonsai garden, rose and orchid
garden, and a landscape garden. There will also be an exhibition of
indigenous flowers as well as rare plants from around the world. Visitors can
also enjoy musical performances and traditional dances during the show. So make

Flower
show at Ooty is to showcase the rich heritage of
flora and to comprehend the global trends of floriculture, the Department of
Horticulture and Plantation Crop; Government of Tamilnadu organizes the ANNUAL
FLOWER SHOW every year alluring people from across the country to the
Queen of Hills. Held usually in the month of May at the globally renowned
Botanical Garden of Udagamandalam, the fest flaunts the beauty of the floral
exhibits.
The
history of the flower show that is now credited to be a show-stopper of the
South dates back to 1896 when it was first organised by the Nilgiri
Agricultural Society. The first flower show was inaugurated by the
Collector and Chairman of the Agricultural Society, Mr.J.H.Tremenhere. And ever
since the vibrant horticultural displays are put up on show every year in the
month of May.
The
government however acquired the show in the year 1980 and celebrated the
centenary in 1995. The elaborate arrangements served as a feast to the
gardening enthusiasts. The centenary year also saw the birth of the
mindboggling rose garden consisting of four terrace in a sprawling area of 4
Hectares. The garden, one of its kind in the South has never failed to lure
large number of tourists, both domestic and foreign.
Besides
exhibiting the floral feasts, the flower show also engages in creating
awareness among the flower growers, garden lovers and the farming community by
conducting a garden competition. The competition also ropes in Estate Gardens,
Private Cottage Gardens, Public Gardens besides the gardens coming under
various other categories. On an average, every year, nearly 200 gardens vie
with each other to bag the "Best Garden" title and win prizes. The
competiton is usually held before the flower show begins. A highlight of the
flower show is that every year around 10,000 flower pots are put up on display
and this apart from the 1500 flower pots that are placed by the competitors.
The show is a cynosure with 150 varieties of flowers in different hues decorating
the landscape.
On
the flower show day, about 250 exhibitors participate in various categories and
several government departments and voluntary organizations also display their
talents. More than 50 varieties of potted plants are exhibited by competitors
and over 150 varieties of cut flowers sport a soothing display to the vision.
Various kinds of tropical and temperate vegetables are also exhibited by
the growers for the competitions. Floral decorations, Indian and Japanese
flower arrangements, vegetable carving, flower rangoli, bonsai etc., are
some of the major attractions during the show days. The exclusive cut flower
stalls from the private and public gardens also serve as a feather to the cap.
More than 93 kinds of flowers
and 42 kinds of potted flowering plants will be on the display in the flower
show.

SERVICES OFFERED DURING FLOWER SHOW:

A
new SANITARY COMPLEX has been has been opened for the public’s convenience
besides services like continuous supply of drinking water, extra sanitary work
force for regular cleaning, additional dustbins etc. are also made available.

First
aid and Medical services are ensured at the garden premises.
· A
cafeteria run by Tamilnadu tourism Development Corporation caters to the needs
of the tourists.
·
Special
public conveyance is arranged by the State Transport Corporation from nearby
cities and neighbouring states. Numbers of circuit buses within the district
have also been increased.
·
Nilgiri
Mountain Railway is operating additional services from Mettupalayam to Ooty.
·
Additional
police force is deployed from other districts to the Nilgiris for general
bandhobust and free flow of traffic.

and NCC volunteers will guide the tourists.
